Dr. Chu was born and raised in South Korea, the child of medical missionaries. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and subsequently completed both medical school and pediatric residency at UNC School of Medicine in Chapel Hill. He moved to Asheville with his wife and children following residency training in 1997.

He and his wife enjoy many sports, gardening, hiking, biking, traveling and their church. They have four adult children.
